QUICK LOFT BOARDING QUOTE

Suitcases, seasonal decorations and keepsakes can take over cupboards that would be more useful for everyday belongings. Where the roof structure is suitable, a planned loft storage area can help put those occasional-use items in one place.
Joe Day Loft Control installs raised loft boarding and loft ladders in Oxford. We welcome enquiries from Headington, Cowley and Summertown, as well as elsewhere across the city.
We start by considering how you will use the space and how you will reach it, so the finished platform is practical rather than simply large.

Is the loft yours to alter?

For an individually owned house, the main questions may be structure and access. In a flat or shared building, the right to use or alter the roof space needs checking before installation is arranged.

Confirm any freeholder, management-company or other necessary permissions, and tell us about shared entrances. We can then assess the proposed boarding within the agreed space. A platform should not obstruct access needed by others or cover equipment that must remain serviceable.

Build the storage around a sensible route

We look at the position of the hatch, where you step off the ladder and which areas have usable headroom. Trusses, pipes and the insulation below influence the layout.

A central deck with a defined access route may work better than boarding into low roof edges. The raised system is selected around the insulation build-up and installation requirements, with the existing structure assessed for the intended storage load.

Improve the ladder and hatch together where needed

A fitted ladder can make occasional storage much easier to reach, but it needs suitable space to open. We check ceiling height, hatch size and the room or landing below.

If an alteration is required, we explain it as part of the proposed scope. We also consider how materials can be brought through the property, so please mention restricted parking or a shared staircase when enquiring.

Include the insulation before the deck goes down

If the loft needs topping up, this can be planned before boarding is completed. Our Oxford insulation service covers the assessment and suitable installation work. The Oxford energy-efficiency explains the link with broader home improvements.

Oxford boarding FAQs

Yes, subject to the loft being suitable. Tell us the approximate space you need rather than assuming the whole roof must be floored.

No. This is storage and access work, not a habitable conversion. A bedroom requires a separate design and the relevant structural and regulatory considerations.

We can discuss a ladder-only project, including whether there is an appropriate area to step onto at loft level.
